BT has defended its continued refusal to commit to an upgrade of its next-generation access network by suggesting that its apparently more-forward-looking counterparts are failing to adequately prepare for the future. The operator is one of the few remaining European incumbents that has no plans to roll out fibre-to-the-node or -home networks in at least the next two years, leading to concern from some quarters that the UK's competitive position will suffer as a result. However, Matt Beal, CTO of BT Wholesale, says these operators may have invested far too little in their core networks, making them vulnerable to the impact of high-bandwidth services such as IPTV. BT is instead waiting for the price of optical fibre and related technologies, such as gigabit passive optical networking (GPON), to come down before it upgrades its access network, while upgrading its core network. This way, BT is ensuring that it will not only be able to deliver high-quality next-generation services, but also save money on any future access upgrade, says Beal. Stephan Neidlinger, vice-president of business management for PON at Nokia Siemens Networks, a supplier to BT's 21CN, says he expects the price of GPON to drop dramatically. "GPON volume will increase significantly in the upcoming years," says Neidlinger. "Based on this effect, prices will decrease. The same effect could be seen in the EPON market space."
