Conventional telecoms operators stand to lose out as a ground-breaking scheme to allow the air-travel industry to take the majority of its voice calls elsewhere begins to take off over the next two years. Fortunately for the operators, security problems, incompatible equipment and slim cost savings mean SITAs Voice Exchange model is unlikely to be emulated by more than a few other sectors in the coming years. In the meantime, the companies' problems present an opportunity for operators to become a new kind of middleman. SITA operates the global data-backbone network that connects airlines, airports and other air-travel businesses worldwide. Voice Exchange, launched in June 2006, is designed to enable its 600 owner-members and other interested organisations to directly interconnect, or "peer", their voice calls.
