Buying a telecom service is eerily similar to buying a car. You can't purchase only four wheels and an engine, and you'd be hard pressed to buy a no-frills voice service. Today's telecom services are bundled into packages of enhanced voice, highspeed data and wireless service. These bundles, often accompanied by individual service discounts, drive revenues and deliver a stickiness that makes it difficult for fickle subscribers to break apart their packages and mix and match among increasingly competitive providers. For the 21st century service provider, it is the cost of doing business. "Being able to support the concept of bundles from a single point of contact for ordering or being able to automate discounts across multiple services to a convergent bill is the price of entry," said Curt Champion, vice president of market and product strategy for billing vendor Convergys.
