The FCC has proposed a limited oversight role for itself with respect to decisions by the private STIR/ SHAKEN (Secure Telephony Identity Revisited/Sig-nature-based Handling of Asserted information using toKENs) Governance Authority to revoke digital certificates in the form of SPC (service provider code) tokens that authenticate voice service providers, to the extent that such a revocation would place a provider in non-compliance with FCC rules. "We anticipate that exercising an oversight role would provide necessary due process to parties that may be rendered noncompliant with our rules by the actions of a private entity without unduly interfering with the well-functioning multi-stakeholder private STIR/SHAKEN governance processes," the FCC said in a second further notice of proposed rulemaking (FNPRM) in WC docket 17-97 adopted Jan. 13 and released Jan. 15.
