Here's how Goodness Gracious Me began. About four years ago, Anil Gupta, the show's producer, was working at the BBC as a script editor in comedy development. He'd worked behind the scenes of a few series of The Real McCoy (a sketch show with Black Afro-Caribbean slant) with the actress Meera Syal. "After each one, she'd say to me: 'We are the token Asians in this team' and I'd say 'Yes, Meera' and not do anything about it. I wasn't aware of much of an Asian comedy scene. As far as I knew Meera was it," says Gupta.
