摘要

Sri Lanka's newly elected government is optimistic that the European Union will soon restore the GSP Plus concession that was withdrawn in August 2010 because of the failure of the previous government led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to implement the international conventions on human rights. In an election he called last year, Mr Rajapaksa lost the presidency to Maithripala Sirisena and a new Cabinet was sworn in at the beginning of this year. According to the new prime minister, Ranil Wickremasinghe, the government has taken diplomatic initiatives to regain the GSP Plus advantage. The loss of this special privilege the country had enjoyed for several years and assisted its industrial export sector "has resulted in the loss of about US$5,000 million in the past few years," says the finance minister, Ravi Karunanayake. Regaining the privilege, he adds, could help starting new factories and creating employment opportunities.
