Demand for nonwovens which suffered seriously from the 2008-13 economic recession is bouncing back. The recession, which is considered the greatest since the Second World War, was sparked by the US subprime mortgage crisis. It had shaken the developed world's economies that constitute the major markets for nonwovens to the core and dampened demand in both the disposable and the durable categories for some years. That phase is now past. The upturn that the US economy began experiencing since last year has helped to revive demand again, noted Brad Kalil who is the director of market research and statistics at INDA, the association of the nonwoven fabrics industry. Delivering a keynote address at the 2015 edition of the conference on Nonwovens for High-performance Applications (NHPA) in Cannes, France, in early March, Mr Kalil said that the rise in demand last year was not significant. Tonnage increased 1.4% mainly due to the demand for heavier weight fabrics; but the actual volume of sales measured by sq. metres showed only 0.2% increase. Nonetheless, now that the US economy has gained strength and a positive out look for the days ahead, Mr Kalil said that North American consumption of nonwovens is forecast to improve and tonnage increase by an estimated 5.1% annually. Besides, demand for materials suitable to new and specific end-use that would also employ other new materials, he said, would continue to remain the catalyst for further growth in demand for nonwovens.
