A three-dimensional (3D) spacer fabric specially treated with impact-hardening polymer for impact protection has been developed by the Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA). It allows high air permeability and keeps a good balance between the high protective performance (which meets Standard EN 1621-1: 1997) and comfort, says Dr Hong Hu of the Institute of Textiles and Clothing, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University who is mainly responsible for developing this fabric.
