Bangladesh now has a textile university. Inaugurating this institution called Bangladesh Textile University last month the country's prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, said it marked the dawn of "a new era in the field of textile technology and engineering." Located in the Tejgaon area of the capital city Dhaka, this seat of learning has a long history. It began as a weaving school in 1921 and was upgraded as textile institute in 1950, more than 20 years before the east wing of Pakistan broke away to become the sovereign nation of Bangladesh. As a fully-fledged university now, it has taken 270 students in six departments of its three faculties for the current academic year.
