A number of manufacturing companies and industrial organisations are raising objection to Indonesia, a founding member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), implementing the ASEAN-China free trade agreement that is scheduled to take effect next January. The FTA grants all parties mutual tariff-free market access for textiles and clothing. Currently textiles and garments entering Indonesia are subject to 5-15% import duty. Even then an avalanche of low-priced clothings from China floods the Indonesian market to the detriment of local textile industry.
