Speaking on behalf of the Foreign Trade Association, a Brussels-based organisation that represents the foreign trade interest of European importers and retailers, I will cover three main topics: 1. Supply and vendor strategy under the influence and after the end of quotas; 2. The risk of EU textile safeguards against Chinese textile imports; 3. Potential trade-protection measures from the European side, and what can be done to limit the damage. The Foreign Trade Association was founded in Brussels in 1977. It is an organisation that consists of national trade associations, as well as individual companies from West European countries. Our members include companies such as Metro, Auchan, Inditex and others. These companies trade in consumer goods, and textiles and clothing make up a huge part of their turnover. Our highest priority is to prevent trade-restricting measures from being introduced on imports from China or any other countries outside the EU. Particularly our mission is for free global trade and a multilateral trade system. The FTA works by analysing political and legal developments that affect our members and by giving decision-makers our inputs. We are in regular contact with the relevant international organisations, particularly with the European Commission and the EU Member States, as well as the governments of our supplier countries.
