In Italy sales fell back

The Italian textile machine industry is closing a year, 2003, which was not especially positive. Preliminary figures from ACIMIT indicate a slight drop in production levels, largely due to a considerable reduction in sales in the Italian market. Foreign demand was slightly on the increase. ACIMIT estimated that at the end of the year production would have fallen by 1% from 2002 to EUD3,381m, while exports would have increased by 2% to EUD2,468m. "These results", says Dr Alberto M. Sacchi, President of ACIMIT, "are due to the weak economic situation affecting the entire world economy for most of the year, plus the well-known geo-political situation, and SARS, which blocked the activities of our companies for a considerable time in certain important Asian markets." Most worrying was the situation in the domestic market, which takes about 30% of the sales of Italian producers. "The continuation of the difficult situation in the Italian textile and clothing industry is felt strongly by our sector", says Dr Sacchi. The drop in imports seen in 2003 also shows that the turnaround for the various sectors and customers has again been postponed.
