Recent years have not been particularly good for exporters seeking to sell textile machinery to the United Stales. Shipments to US buyers peaked in 1998, when US imports totalled US$2, 147m. In 2002 sales were only $868m, down 60%. Today the import market remains weak, but has improved slightly since August 2002. Except for October 2002, imports each month have been higher than the corresponding month a year earlier. Average monthly gains equalled 13.5% for the nine-month period August 2002 to April 2003, and total imports rose to $444m from $391m for August 2001 to April 2002.
