The total exhibition time at ITMA 2003 in Birmingham was 20% less than at earlier shows - eight days instead of 10. During this short period visitors had to familiarise themselves with the new situation. At a seminar organised by ACIMIT held in the evening of the opening day on October 22, and followed by a buffet dinner, it was announced that the next ITMA would be held in Munich. At that moment the visitors had hardly had time to work out their program for the coming seven days. The time of the announcement was unsuitable, diverting attention from the current Fair. It should have been made either long before the opening or several weeks afterwards, so as to give visitors and exhibitors time to appreciate the pleasures or problems to come. It took me several days to find out which other important exhibitors, apart from the Big Three were missing, and what categories of machines were missing other than the flat knitting machines and related equipment which had gone to IKME. Exhibitors in Hall 16, displaying dyeing, washing, bleaching etc equipment, were scattered, sparsely with much empty space left, and the Hall temperature was too low, so that some exhibitors were shivering. Some therefore organised themselves to heat up instant noodles to keep out the cold, and one hardly saw any visitors during the first three days. The exhibitors published their complaints in the local newspapers, then someone decided to spend additional money to attract visitors to the particular hall by offering free lunches. This particular Hall thus obtained ample publicity but perhaps not much business.
