Reactive dyes were used to dye 100% bleached cotton with red, blue, and yellow shades and a dye mixture containing equal amounts of each of three dyes. The spent dyebath water from these dyeings was mixed and subjected to decolorization treatment using a ferrous ion-hydrogen peroxide system (Fenton's Reagent) in an acidic medium. The four shades were dyed again in 100% peroxide renovated spent dyebath water after adjusting the pH to 10.8-11.0. No additional chemical auxiliaries were added to the renovated dyebaths. The experiment was repeated through three reuse cycles. Color reproducibility of dyeings done in the recycled water was excellent for dark shades, closely matching the shades developed in dyeings using fresh tap water as the dyeing medium. The amount of acid needed to change the pH decreased with each cycle showing that the peroxide treatment produced substances that behave as an acid buffer. The COD of the solution increased with each reuse cycle and approached a terminal value after three reuse cycles indicating that the organic content of the bath was approaching a steady state. An economic analysis of the estimated chemical and energy savings achieved by dyebath reuse was also completed.
