摘要

With the dismantling of the Multi-fibre Arrangement on New Year's day, the world ended a 40-years-old system that capped poor countries textile exports to affluent nations, freeing trade worth $300 billion and throwing open rich Western markets to countries like India. India's textile industry, its oldest and largest industry that generates the highest number of jobs, second only to agriculture, looked poised to cash in on this transformation of the world's textile trade. Indian textile manu- facturers believe that the country can make it big in world trade in textiles and garments following an end to import quota curbs imposed under the old system.
