Maintaining its position as the world's leading textile machinery manufacturing nation, Germany reported a significant rise in export deliveries of 7% in 1997 compared to the previous year. Official figures from the national texile machinery association VDMA show that equipment worth almost DM 8 billion was shipped worldwide last year. While exports into European markets reached DM 3.4 billion - the same level as in 1996 -deliveries to Asia rose by about 4% to DM 2.3 billion. The accompanying graphics illustrate key aspects of the German industry's performance.
