The briefing was held in the Terrace Pavilion, overlooking the Thames and many iconic London landmarks. With tea, coffee and pastries in abundance, a room full of distinguished guests (yours truly omitted from that description) sat down to discover more about the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) initiative that Thatcham is asking the government to partially fund. Jim Fitzpatrick MR former road safety minister and member of the Transport Select Committee chaired the meeting and began by introducing Peter Shaw, chief executive of Thatcham. Peter was the first of four speakers and began by saying that AEB fits into a 'passive safety' technology category, which has seen such advancements as safety cells, airbags and seatbelts. Peter stated that we are now moving towards 'active safety' with driver intervention systems (eg Electronic Stability Controls (ESC)) and where driverless cars are likely to be accessible to the public (according to Peter and Thatcham) in around 15 years.
