Consulting motor engineer, Mike Phoenix recounts his experiences of investigating wheel losses on My first introduction to heavy goods vehicle loss was in the early to mid-1980s. At the time, I was working for the UK arm of a major international insurer. Transport companies, due to their claims histories, were struggling to obtain insurance cover. My company thought they saw a profitable niche in the market. To put it mildly, a major disaster ensued. Things got so bad on the claims front that I was given almost carte blanche to sort the job out. The cost of two or three claims ran into enormous sums. We were faced with potentially massive losses. My first suggestion was to refuse renewal at the end of the policy. In hindsight, this would have been the most economical method. However, the big chiefs decided to persevere. So off I went on my mission to solve the wheel loss problem.
