Campaigners concerned about how driving two 16km rail tunnels through the Chilterns willaffect the area’s precious chalk streams have begun legal action against the EnvironmentAgency (EA). Misbourne Environmental Protection (MEP), which names hydrologists and geologists among its members, saysthat the HS2 tunnels, the longest on its route, pose a “very significant risk” of polluting an aquifer that providesLondon with 20% of its drinking water. The project also threatens the “visually stunning” Shardloes Lake and the riverMisbourne, the chalk stream that runs through it, the group claims.
