I pen these few words a short while after the Regional Officer's meeting with the ILE Executive Board at Lennox House. These regular meetings are becoming an integral part of the ILE year and provide a useful forum for the exchange of ideas between Regions and with the Council. Perhaps the most striking thing to come out of the meeting is the continued expansion in the membership of the Institution (currently standing at 1891) and the growth of interest and activity at Regional level. Interestingly only a handful of applications have been received from people wishing to join via the new route to membership, which opens up corporate membership to professional lighters from a non-engineering background. This confounds our detractors who have accused us of creating the new route merely to increase membership. More importantly it demonstrates that the ILE has got its act together and is providing the service that professional lighters require.
