The Highways Agency's decision to trial the switching off of motorway lighting between the hours of midnight and 5.00am on selected stretches is not a short term fix ('Max Watts Sounds Off, U December 2009, p 12), but the first of several measures we are examining to reduce the carbon footprint of managing and operating the motorway network, while maintaining its excellent safety record.rn'Switch Off trials are limited to carefully selected sections of motorways with a good safety record, where the evidence suggests that the switching off of lighting will not have a detrimental effect on safety. Junctions currently remain lit and the trial is limited to sections of motorway. Trunk roads are not currently considered appropriate for this type of intervention.
