Following the publication of the Highways Agency document HD46-05 - Quality Management Systems for Designers - which contains indicative requirements for design staff competencies, the ILE's Membership & Education Committee has reviewed these, to establish what further guidance might be required. The aim of the review was to produce specific guidance to lighting designers and their staff, to enable them to meet the requirements of HD46-05, as well as identifying competency and training requirements, in order to plan the right education development for themselves and their staff. Lighting designers who are quality assured to BS EN ISO 9001:2000 can now incorporate these requirements into their Quality Procedures. Those who are not quality assured to this standard can adopt the principles of the Lighting Design Staff Competency Matrix as best practice.
