You are probably well informed as to the BALPA wide deal struck with the HMRC on Fixed Rate Expense Allowance (FREA), which enables all pilots to claim an allowance peryear of £850 plus a further £100 to cover certain travel costs. It is possible to include the full £950 allowance in your PAYE code, which is used to calculate the amount of tax deducted from your salary during the year, regardless of whether BALPA has recognition with your airline.
