In April thisyearthe Government will raise air passenger duty (APD) by afurtheno per cent -approximately twice the rate of inflation, the justification for this double inflation rise being that a planned APD increase was deferred in 2011. However, the figures show that, even before this latest increase, APD in the UK was eight-and-a-half times the European average and more than twice as much as in the United States.Japan or Australia, and that in the period from 2007 to 2010 preceding the deferred 2011 rise, APD rose by 140 per cent for short haul flights and 325 per cent for long haul flights.
