The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (FTIA) and the Swedish Maritime Administration (Sjöfartsverket) have signed a cooperation agreement for the design of the next generation of icebreakers. The agreement aims to carry out design work for three Swedish and two Finnish icebreakers, to replace the 1970s vintage Atle/ Urho class of vessels, which are approaching the end of their operational lifespan. The design of the icebreakers will be carried out as a joint procurement. The two agencies previously cooperated as part of the procurement of the Atle/Urho class of icebreakers in the 1970s.
