The European Union will invest €2m to convert two Scandline ferries to diesel-electric propulsion, covering 20% of the total project cost. The funding under the EU's TEN-T transport infrastructure improvement programme will help Scandlines meet the SOx emission limit introduced in the Baltic Sea this year. The hybrid propulsion systems will cut SOx emissions by 99%, particulate matter by 88% and CO_2 by 15%. The conversions will be made to ferries plying the route between Rodby and Puttgarden. They will be completed by the end of the year. The initiative was selected for EU funding with the assistance of external experts under one of TEN-T's priority projects dedicated to improving marine transport, named 'Motorways of the Sea'. Its implementation will be monitored by the European Commission's Innovation and Networks Executive Agency.
