As we wander round the SMM exhibition this month, ways of increasing efficiency and reducing costs will be on the minds of ship owners and operators, and the marine industry will have plenty of solutions on offer. However, it can be guaranteed that one vital part of every ship afloat will be ail-but forgotten. That is something without which no ship can ever operate safely, efficiently and economically -the seafarers themselves.rnSome enlightened owners recognise the importance of their crews, invest in training and, importantly, enhance their life onboard in order to retain this valuable resource. Others, however, treat personnel as a consumable, to be bought at the cheapest rate possible as and when needed.
