When a new oil is designed it is tested for 4,000 hours and "for us the chemistry is not important - what is important is the performance of the engines," says Aabo. MAN B&W's customer is the operator which the company wants to satisfy. "Actually we have had to remove three known oils from our list of oils for which we have given 'no objection' letters in the last eight years," says Aabo. (MAN B&W does not approve oils but gives them "no objection" letters.) "These three oils from major oil companies have then been redesigned and the new oils entered on our lists."
