DURING THE IACP BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING ON OCTOBER 23, 2020,I am scheduled to be sworn in fourth vice president. A life member of the IACP, I have served as a chief of police for over 35 years. My service in IACP started with membership in the Investigative Operations Committee in 1990 on which I served until 2018.I have also served on the Financial Review Committee for two terms. In 2018,I was elected to serve as vice president-treasurer. It has been my honor to serve as the president of the Texas Police Chiefs Association, North Texas Police Chiefs Association, South Plains of Texas Police Chiefs Association, and the Houston Area Police Chiefs Association. I served as police chief in McKinney, Texas, and Lubbock, Texas, and I am currently the chief for the City of West University Place, Texas. These cities range from 15,000 to 210,000 residents, and the agencies range from 26 to 310 officers. This is without a doubt the most trying time I've experienced in my long career. We've seen cities erupt into violence and politicians blaming the police. We've also seen too many officers injured and necessary tools used to quell riots taken away strictly for political reasons. I understand that a minute percentage of police officers dishonor the uniform by behavior that is totally unacceptable-but I also understand that the vast majority of officers are dedicated, honorable, and committed to the communities we serve. We are losing chiefs to retirements, resignations, and terminations. These long-serving chiefs have the experience, knowledge, and character needed to lead through these times, and it is imperative that we find ways to support and assist chiefs to navigate these difficult times. It will be my primary goal, as I'm sure it is with the other elected IACP officers, to support chiefs and the great officers we work with every day.
