The long-running battle by Campaign for Borders Rail to attract tourist trains to the soon-to-be-reopened line between Newcraighall and Tweedbank in Scotland appears to have been won. Campaign for Borders Rail (CBR) had been petitioning the Scottish Transport Minister Keith Brown to make the move possible, but it seemed as though their plea had fallen on deaf ears. However, as The RM went to press last month, the group announced that"guidance" issued by Transport Scotland for the next ScotRail franchise requires the new operator to adjust the Borders Railway timetable to accommodate tourist trains. This means charters can operate on Saturdays, with Transport Scotland's Draft Invitation to Tender for the ScotRail franchise specifying: "The Scottish Ministers consider that it is desirable to allow the operation of charter and tourist services by other operators to promote tourism. The franchisee will be required to facilitate such operations and co-operate through alterations to its regular timetabled service, at no additional cost."
