Protracted legal action and delays have led to Abellio pulling out of a contract to provide trains for Germany's Mitteldeutsche S-Bahn-Netz II (Mid-German S-Bahn Network Lot 2). Abellio's German subsidiary won the contract to operate the franchise in March this year -5.6 million train kilometres annually, starting in December 2015. As part of the contract, Abellio was required to provide brand new trains, which had not yet been ordered due to ongoing legal challenges started by the losing bidder, German national operator DB. In early October, Abellio informed the authorities that had awarded the contract that it was no longer planning to sign the contract, as it should have been agreed by the end of September.
