The Severn Valley Railway has grasped a few nettles since being reopened by enthusiasts in 1970, but nothing could ever have prepared it for the scene of utter devastation its workforce woke up to on the morning of June 20 last year. A month's rainfall in less than two hours deluged the Bridgnorth-Kidderminster line overnight. Flash floods of unprecedented severity swept away embankments to leave rails hanging in mid-air and a litany of mudslides, dipped track and mayhem along the 12 miles of line between Bridgnorth and Folly Point, near Bewdley. In all, 45 flood-damaged sites were reported, many of which had completely breached the line. But on March 21 this year - 245 days after the last passenger train ran over the full 16-mile route and following major reconstruction that has cost more than £3.5 million - the SVR reopened to public through trains once more.
