If the goal of the work considered as a whole is to put aside typical assumptions about philosophical versus nonphilosophical discourse, then since there is no effort to supply a comprehensive definition of philosophy the exploration of "philosophical dimensions" of other discourses entails some question begging. Wian, however, offers a less ambitious unity to the chapters when writing, "the essays presented here demonstrate that the poets and playwrights of ancient Greece exhibit a high degree of critical self-awareness and reflection on issues more typically associated with ancient philosophers."
