MADAM, I read the article by Max Hastings in the December 2014 edition of the RUSI Journal with much interest and am in broad agreement with his observations. Within 2 PARA, our Regimental Medical Officer, Captain Steve Hughes, conducted his own survey of mental health in the Battalion after Operation Corporate, the code name for British military operations in the Falklands in April-June 1982. In his opinion around 22 per cent of veterans demonstrated all the symptoms of PTSD and perhaps 50 per cent showed some of those symptoms. One of his medics committed suicide recently.
