摘要

It was never going to be easy for an exhibition related to the First World War to get noticed in this centenary year of commemoration, when such exhibitions are popping up everywhere. That is, of course, unless the exhibition in question has a unique focus to it. The Artists Rifles: From Pre-Raphaelites to Passchendaele offers precisely that. The exhibition represents a very personal take on the marriage of artists with military life. The Artists Rifles, a unit of volunteers fired with patriotic zeal, was founded as the 38th Middlesex (Artists') Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1860, when invasion by the French was considered a serious possibility. The early enrolment contained a significant proportion of painters, many of whom had already established successful careers. It is worth noting that becoming a volunteer rifleman was a considerable commitment for a working artist, involving a minimum of eight drills a month.
