Paul Arthur Berkman is Head of the Arctic Ocean Geopolitics Programme at the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge, and a Research Professor at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an oceanographer working on interdisciplinary connections between science, policy and information technology to promote co-operation and prevent conflict in the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica and regions beyond sovereign jurisdictions more generally. His science diplomacy activities involve: balancing national interests and common interests in the Arctic Ocean, assessing science policy lessons from the Antarctic Treaty System, and considering the role of international spaces in global governance for the lasting benefit of all life on Earth.
