摘要

Will the greatest Englishman of the twentieth-century 'outlive' the greatest Indian? He did in life. Gandhi was assassinated in 1947, well short of his intended 120-year lifespan, while Churchill kept going, with modern medicine, till 1965. Facile books on Churchill continue to blow his trumpet for him, and he now has his own museum by Clive Steps; but it is Gandhi, along with Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela, who are taught as heroes of the modern age in English primary schools. An American scholar has written a fascinating, if error-prone, book on 'Gandhi and Churchill'. Will American imperialist scholarship one day determine how British imperial history is seen in the ever-expanding English-speaking world? That would annoy Churchill, who thought it was his role, not just to make the history, but to write it as well. Arthur Herman interweaves the well-known careers of the two great men, and adds many a pithy insight. His narrative tends to jump about a bit, with a fast forward here and a quick backtrack there, but the contrasts are aptly pointed. The over-arching theme is how the two men clashed over the future of the Indian Empire, the British Raj. Their visions were not that different to begin with: both men put on British uniform in the Boer War in 1899. But Gandhi's disappointments with British justice gradually made him into Churchill's arch-opponent.
