摘要

NATO approaches its sixtieth anniversary busier than ever before. In recent years, Allies have been working hard to adapt their policies, structures and capabilities to a new security environment marked by terrorism, failed states and regional instability. More than 65,000 soldiers are now deployed in a range of NATO-led missions on three different continents -including more than 50,000 in Afghanistan alone, by far the Alliance's most demanding mission ever. And NATO is determined to involve partner nations and other international organisations in a concerted effort to meet today's global challenges. In addition to dealing with immediate risks and threats, NATO also needs to look ahead and to prepare for emerging challenges. Together with the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the threat of cyber warfare, energy security is one of those emerging challenges to which the Alliance has devoted more and more attention over the past few years. I firmly believe that the security dimension of our energy supply, and hence the need for NATO to focus on this issue, will become even stronger in the future, for a variety of reasons.
