摘要

Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College, Oxford and author of a two-volume naval history of Britain Andrew Lambert's eleven admirals are a diverse selection, illustrating periods from the Elizabethan age (Lord Howard of Effingham) to the Second World War (Sir Andrew Cunningham). They range from royalty (James Duke of York) to relative social obscurity (Robert Blake), from famous names like Sir John Fisher, to officers like Sir Geoffrey Phipps Hornby who are familiar only to specialists. Some of these admirals (like Cunningham) spent all the time they could at sea, but others (like Fisher) always disliked it. Their careers are chosen to illuminate different aspects of the art of the admiral: tactics, strategy and leadership, but also administration, politics and diplomacy. Most of these studies emphasise and demonstrate how a great admiral needs to be much more than merely a brave and skilful sea commander. Fisher is a notable example of an officer whose victories were all won in the drawing-room or the lecture theatre; the 'ruthless bounder' Sir David Beatty was more successful as a politician than a fleet commander.
