The international community's recent efforts to prevent nuclear proliferation in the Middle East have had varying results. For example, despite years of international pressure, Iraq appears to have intentionally nurtured uncertainties regarding its Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) capabilities in order to deter Iran. Libya, on the other hand, announced its decision to dismantle its nuclear weapons programme on 19 December 2003 after intense negotiations with the US and the UK, while Iran appears to be pursuing a nuclear weapons option in spite of protests by the international community.
