Many of us look to Boxing Day as an opportunity to reflect upon the day before, when perhaps we may have celebrated 'not wisely, but too well'. In December 2004, this period of quiet recuperation was shattered by the news of the tsunami that originated just southwest of Aceh Province in Indonesia, and devastated not only Aceh, but also Sri Lanka, southern India, Thailand, the Nicobar and Andaman Islands, and across the Indian Ocean to the east coast of Africa. The reported death toll at the time of writing is just under 300,000, with many more missing, presumed dead. The images of the great wave are fearful enough, but it is only the aggregation of images of the devastation caused that can convey any idea of the horror of this natural disaster. Doubtless those who were in the region when the tsunami struck and in the first days of the aftermath have absorbed a deeper and unforgettable reality. Yet from the darkness came many tales of heroism, of grace and of generosity; and the popular response to appeals to help with the relief effort was remarkable.
