Nevertheless, Hartington, Rhodes and Warren had established, albeit unwittingly, a workable model for dealing with what was effectively state-sponsored terrorism. Firstly, they went for the problem at source, dealing only with Kruger and refusing any charade of recognition for the proxy states. Secondly, the make up of the Bechuanaland Field Force was a remarkable expression of an ability to perfectly match an effective and tailored force package to mirror that of its enemies, delivered in overwhelming but proportionate strength - no asymmetric warfare here, but the analysis of an enemy's capability and the creation of forces to fight them on their own terms. Perhaps a modern day equivalent to this might be an intelligence-led aerial drone strike against an Al-Qa'ida facility.
