In reactive gas mixtures, excitation transfers between active plasma species must be considered. Such mechanisms are in addition to electron collision processes inside the gas discharge. They dominate in post-discharge conditions where electric field cannot heat the electrons. The excitation transfers are presently analyzed in gas mixtures where a rare gas, as He or Ar, or a molecular gas, as N_2 and O_2 , is the main component. Among the excitation transfers, the ionizing and non ionizing reactions, the non reactive and reactive mechanisms are distinguished. The dominant active species are in metastable states or they are radicals. The efficiency of excitation transfer from excited neutrals is compared to the one of charge transfers from the ions in the plasma.
