Robust measures support the development of theory andrnadvancement of literature and insights into the reliability andrnvalidity of methods form a crucial part of methods selection forrnpractitioners and researchers. In order to support the selection ofrndata collection technique to measure distributed situationrnawareness (DSA), the reliability and validity associated with themrnmust be explored. This paper presents an empirical study in whichrnthe validity of two data collection techniques which are used torncollect DSA data was considered. The data collection techniquesrnare, in turn, analysed using a network analysis method and thernpaper, further, considered the reliability of the network analysisrnmethod. It was shown that the network analysis method provides arnreliable means of assessing DSA. While low levels of hit rates werernobserved for both communication logs and the CDM, higher hitrnrates were observed for the communication logs indicating that thisrndata collection technique is associated with slightly higher levels ofrnvalidity. These findings support the human factors community inrnthe assessment and representation of DSA in teams.
