Electrochemical growth and properties of CuInS_2 thin films for solar energy conversion

The electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) has been used to study the growth of CuInS_2 films by one-step electrodeposition. Films have been grown on SnO_2/glass substrate from aqueous solutions of In_2(SO_4)_3, CuSO_4, and Na_2SO_3. Differences in the properties and structure of the CuInS_2films are observed depending on the deposition potential and concentration of precursors. X-ray diffraction shows a CuInS_2 phase predominant for films, after annealing at 200℃ in nitrogen atmosphere. The composition of the films was studied with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), showing again predominant CuInS_2, together with secondary phases of Cu_2O/Cu_2S, CuO/CuS, and In_2S_3 compositions.
