I will never forget the first dress I made. At the time, I was a freshman in college living at home, and on a tight budget. An event was coming up. I can no longer remember what it was, but I had determined that I was going to sew a dress for it. Up until that point, the extent of my sewing experience was making simple doll clothes, patching pant knees, and shortening hems. At the local fabric store, I purchased an inexpensive, intensely lavender polyester knit, matching thread, and a McCall's pattern. I felt powerful, determined that I would triumph over my inexperience and certain that my dress would shine.
