I love the look of bar tacks on jeans belt loops, but the added bulk makes my machines skip stitches, while making a straight stitch does not cause the same problem. Here's how I make faux bar tacks. I first measure exactly where the bar tacks should be placed. Then I sew the tacks on a single layer of each belt loop (without attaching it to the waistband) using a zigzag stitch with contrasting jeans thread. Next, I fold and press the belt loop ends under and attach each loop to the waistband using a straight stitch in matching thread. The straight stitch is barely noticeable. It helps to hammer the bulk before stitching. Unless you scrutinize the finished belt loops, you would think they were sewn in the traditional fashion.
