Finding a previously owned Armani jacket in a consignment store is not so unusual, but this one came with an offer I couldn't refuse: free to a good home! I could understand why it hadn't sold; it was a bit wide in the shoulders for the current look. But I was interested in making a similar jacket, with a round neck and without lapels, so I didn't hesitate. As soon as I got it home, I unpicked the partial lining and began to poke around inside. What I discovered was a very clever way to quickly and simply shape and support the shoulder and neckline of any soft, lightweight jacket with a round neckline and no lapels. As you can see in the accompanying photos and drawings, the key is a pieced chest shield, with one portion cut on the straight grain and another cut on the bias, to provide appropriate support to each part of the garment the shield touches.
