摘要

The growth of online shopping has been staggering, and has caught several retailers out. Previously ubiquitous and seemingly rock solid High Street brands have fallen on hard times, having failed to capitalise the swing to online. Indeed, some big names have vanished from our town centres altogether, the most famous of them being Woolworths in 2008. It's hard to imagine today a leading retailer without a web store, but few experts predicted 10 years ago that the UK would make such a swing to online, becoming a world-leading nation for its internet shopping thanks to its size, mobile coverage and high levels of credit card use. In 2008, I visited John Lewis' then-new DC in Magna Park, Milton Keynes. The recession was just kicking in and as my hosts showed me around, they explained how the investment in the facility would pay off in the long term, and how the warehouse was configured to service the needs of its various stores around the country.
